Bubinga
Bubinga, also known as kevazingo, is a species of the genus Guibourtia. Bubinga and
numerous other species of Guibourtia are found in Equatorial Africa, from Southeast
Nigeria through Cameroon and Gabon to the Congo region. They grow in swampy or
periodically flooded forests, as well as near rivers or lakeshores.
Due to its mellow and well-rounded sound, bubinga wood is often used by luthiers for harps
and other instruments, such as bass guitars. It has also been used in drum shells. Some
drum companies offer various high-end drum kits with plies of bubinga in the shells.
Bubinga makes an interesting wood for use in chess boards.
