Why Kids Who Play Chess Outperform Their Classmates, Part I

The Pirc Defense Video

The Pirc Defense is a hypermodern chess defense which means it doesn't attempt to control the center in the early stages with the pawns. Alternatively, black tries to move on the center using his minor pieces from the sides and then after the foundation is in place, looks to weaken the center control which white usually enjoys.

The instructor gives some tips about how the Pirc Defense tries to defend the center with this minor pieces. By fianchettoeing his bishop to g7, black seems to dominate the dark squares in the middle and at the same time, making his light square bishop to build up a great diagonal.

Kevin also discusses the two primary attacks in which white can play against the Pirc Defense, and these are the Austrian Attack and the Classical System.

The most aggressive is the Austrian Attack because white moves his f pawn to f4, exposing a weak spot on his king side while adding pressure on the king side of black. The next move in which white enjoys is the Classical System that moves the second knight to f3 and looks to extend a stronger control of the center before white tries to attack.

For both cases, black will have counterplay, on the other hand, need to be very careful about playing to passive. If black is not cautious, he will find himself in many risks and a position which is too hard to move. Black must have a great play if he attacks the center for white before white has the opportunity to attack.

Watch the video and learn it until it becomes second nature. Then use it against your favorite opponent. They'll want to know your secret!
